Blacksmith Round Drift
Blacksmith Round Drift
The Water Oak Forge Blacksmith Round Drift is a hand-forged tool designed for shaping, enlarging, and finishing round holes in hot steel. Ideal for traditional blacksmithing, tool making, and metal fabrication, these drifts help create consistent, accurately sized openings for rivets, pins, fasteners, and other forged connections.
Featuring a gradual taper from the working tip to the full shaft diameter, each drift allows blacksmiths to progressively expand previously punched holes while refining their shape. The striking end allows the drift to be driven through heated material with controlled hammer blows when necessary.
Available in multiple diameters and lengths, these round drifts are individually forged from new 4140 alloy steel for strength and toughness during demanding hot-working applications.

Tool Care & Recommendations
Made from 4140 alloy steel for strength, toughness, and durability during traditional hot-working applications. Designed to shape and expand previously punched holes rather than create the initial opening.
- Hot Work Only: Use on steel heated to forging temperature. Never attempt to drift cold or hardened steel.
- Temperature Control: Avoid prolonged contact with hot material. If overheated, allow the drift to cool until no visible red heat remains before cooling in oil. Never quench a red-hot tool in oil or water.
- Proper Use: Begin with a suitable punched opening and gradually drive the drift through the heated material. Reheat the workpiece as necessary and use a pritchel plate or suitable support with adequate clearance when driving the drift through stock.
- Inspection & Maintenance: Regularly inspect for cracks, chips, or mushrooming. Dress the working and struck ends as necessary and discontinue use if cracks are present.
- Safe Striking: Use an appropriate, non-hardened striking hammer and avoid excessive or repeated blows without checking the tool.
