Blacksmith Hardy Hot Cut
Blacksmith Hardy Hot Cut
The Water Oak Forge Blacksmith Hardy Hot Cut is a hand-forged, anvil-mounted cutting tool designed for cutting, splitting, and shaping hot steel. An essential tool for traditional blacksmithing and toolmaking, this hardy-mounted cutter provides a stable cutting edge for efficiently separating heated material using controlled hammer strikes.
Featuring a curved cutting edge with an approximately 2.5" radius, this hot cut allows blacksmiths to make controlled cuts in a variety of stock sizes and shapes. The tapered hardy shank is designed to fit securely into compatible anvil hardy holes, providing a convenient cutting surface without the need to hold a separate chisel.
These hardy hot cuts are modeled after the tools featured in Brian Brazeal's Tools to Make Tools curriculum, which I learned through instruction from blacksmith Lyle Wynn. The design reflects traditional blacksmithing techniques and practical toolmaking methods intended for everyday use at the forge.
Each hot cut is individually hand-forged from 4140 alloy steel, selected for its strength and toughness in larger cross-section blacksmithing tools.

Tool Care & Recommendations
Made from 4140 alloy steel for strength, toughness, and durability during traditional hot-cutting applications. Proper temperature control and maintenance are essential to preserving the cutting edge and extending the tool's service life.
- Hot Work Only: Use on steel heated to forging temperature. Never attempt to cut cold or hardened steel.
- Temperature Control: Avoid prolonged contact with hot material. If overheated, allow the tool to cool until no visible red heat remains before cooling in oil. Never quench a red-hot tool in oil or water.
- Proper Fit & Support: Ensure the tapered shank fits securely in the anvil's hardy hole without excessive movement or binding. Never force an oversized shank into the hardy hole.
- Inspection & Maintenance: Regularly inspect for cracks, chips, or edge damage. Dress and maintain the cutting edge as necessary, avoiding excessive heat during grinding. Discontinue use if cracks are present.
- Safe Striking: Use an appropriate hammer and controlled strikes when cutting material. Avoid striking the exposed cutting edge directly, and use caution when cutting completely through stock to prevent hammer or tool damage.
