Blacksmith Hammer Eye Drift

The Water Oak Forge Hammer Eye Drift is a hand-forged blacksmithing tool designed for shaping, expanding, and finishing the eye openings of hammers and other handled tools. An essential tool for traditional hammer making and blacksmithing, this specialty drift helps establish the proper eye shape and taper needed for fitting wooden handles securely.

Featuring a tapered, rounded-rectangular profile, this drift is designed to form the distinctive eye shape commonly found in blacksmithing hammers, sledges, and other handled striking tools. Used after punching the initial opening, the drift gradually expands and refines the eye while helping establish a consistent shape through the hammer head.

Forged from new 4140 alloy steel, this heavy-duty drift provides the strength and toughness needed for repeated hot-working applications. Its approximately 18" length offers additional reach and versatility when working with larger hammer billets and tool heads.

Tool Care & Recommendations

Made from 4140 alloy steel for strength, toughness, and durability during traditional hot-working applications. Designed to shape and expand previously punched openings rather than create the initial hole.

• Hot Work Only: Use on steel heated to forging temperature. Never attempt to drift cold or hardened steel.
• Temperature Control: Avoid prolonged contact with hot material. If overheated, allow the drift to cool until no visible red heat remains before cooling in oil. Never quench a red-hot tool in oil or water.
• Proper Use: Begin with a properly sized punched opening and gradually drive the drift through the heated material. Reheat the workpiece as necessary and avoid forcing the drift through material that has cooled below forging temperature.
• Inspection & Maintenance: Regularly inspect for cracks, chips, mushrooming, or surface damage. Dress the tool as necessary and discontinue use if cracks are present.
• Safe Striking: Use an appropriate, non-hardened striking hammer and avoid excessive or repeated blows without checking the tool. Use a suitable support with adequate clearance for the drift.
