The Water Oak Forge Blacksmith Center Punch is a hand-forged tool designed for marking hole locations, creating starting points for drilling, and laying out patterns on steel. An essential tool for traditional blacksmithing, metalworking, and fabrication, the center punch creates precise indentations that help guide drill bits and establish accurate reference points for additional forging operations.

Our center punches feature a hardened and tempered working tip, allowing them to be used on both hot steel and cold mild steel with proper care. Whether marking hole locations for drilling, establishing reference points, or preparing material for further shaping, this tool is a versatile addition to any blacksmith's toolbox.

Materials & Specifications

  • Material: 5/8" round O1 tool steel
  • Overall Length: Approximately 7"
  • Working End: Tapered center punch tip
  • Heat Treatment: Working tip hardened and tempered
  • Finish: Oil-blackened
  • Construction: Individually hand-forged in South Carolina
  • Intended Use: Center marking, hole layout, drilling preparation, and general metalworking on hot or cold mild steel

Tool Care & Recommendations

Made from O1 tool steel with a hardened and tempered working tip for durability and accurate marking. The struck end remains unhardened for traditional hand-hammered use.

  • Intended Use: Suitable for marking and laying out holes on hot or cold mild steel. Not intended for punching through material or heavy use on hardened steel.
  • Temperature Control: Avoid prolonged contact with hot material to preserve the hardness of the working tip. If overheated, allow the tool to cool until no visible red heat remains before cooling in oil. Never quench a red-hot tool in oil or water.
  • Proper Use: Position the tip at the desired location and use controlled hammer strikes to create a starting indentation for drilling or layout work.
  • Inspection & Maintenance: Regularly inspect for cracks, chips, or mushrooming. Dress the tip and struck end as necessary, avoiding excessive heat during grinding. Discontinue use if cracks are present.
  • Safe Striking: Use an appropriate, non-hardened striking hammer and avoid excessive or repeated blows without checking the tool.

Refer to our Tool Care & Safety Guide for additional maintenance instructions and safe-use recommendations.
