Appalachian Anvil Dust - Celestial Event Collection

There has always been something different about the blacksmith's forge.

Fire, iron, earth, and human hands come together to transform raw material into something new. Across cultures and generations, that relationship has given the blacksmith—and even the remnants of the blacksmith's work—a place in folklore, folk magic, and spiritual traditions.

This is genuine anvil dust collected from a working blacksmith shop in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina.

Also known as blacksmith dirt, forge scale, or hammer scale, anvil dust is created naturally as hot iron and steel are worked beneath the hammer. Scale breaks away with every blow, gradually collecting around the anvil as a physical remnant of the forging process.

Collected Differently

At Water Oak Forge, our anvil dust is intentionally collected in small batches.

This material comes only from the anvil where traditional hand-hammer work is performed. Dust and scale from our power hammer and hydraulic press are not included.

Our steel is also heated in a traditional solid-fuel forge, rather than a propane forge, keeping the process rooted as closely as practical to the fire, iron, hammer, and anvil traditions from which the folklore surrounding blacksmithing developed.

Collected Under the Sky

Rather than continuously collecting and packaging anvil dust, each batch is gathered during a particular celestial or astronomical event.

Depending on what is happening overhead, batches may be collected during:

• Full moons
• New moons
• Lunar or solar eclipses
• Meteor showers
• Comets or other notable astronomical events

Each event produces only what the forge produces.

Typically, that means just five to ten 30-gram bags per batch, although quantities vary depending upon how much traditional anvil work is being done during the collection period. Once a particular batch is gone, it cannot be recreated.

Traditional & Folkloric Uses

Anvil dust has a long association with blacksmithing folklore and has found a place in Hoodoo, rootwork, witchcraft, folk magic, and other spiritual traditions.

Traditional uses and associations include protection and warding, strength, luck and prosperity, attraction work, mojo and charm bags, dressing candles, spell jars and bottles, and feeding or working with lodestones.

How you incorporate it into your own tradition or practice is entirely your own.

Each batch is naturally unique. Particle size, texture, color, magnetic properties, and composition will vary according to the steel being forged and the work being performed.

If there is an upcoming moon phase, eclipse, meteor shower, or other astronomical event meaningful to your practice, feel free to contact Water Oak Forge. If the forge is running during that event, we may be able to collect a special batch.
