Tool and Effect: Slot Punches
Slot punches are blacksmithing tools used to create rectangular or oval holes in hot steel during forging. These openings are then refined and brought to final dimension using drifts or secondary shaping tools depending on the application.
For best results, material should always be at forging temperature when punching. This allows the steel to move cleanly without cracking or tearing. Equally important is keeping the tool itself cool throughout use to maintain edge integrity and prevent deformation during repeated strikes.
Thick Stock Application
The thick stock slot punch is used in heavier material where a larger, more oval-shaped opening is required. This tool is especially useful when working with thicker cross-sections where more displacement is needed.
One of the most common uses in the shop is punching holes for tong rivets, where strength and consistent geometry are critical.

Thin Stock Application
The thin stock slot punch is designed for lighter material where precision and control are more important than heavy displacement.
A common application for this tool is in making bottle openers and flat stock projects where clean, controlled punching is required in thinner material sections.
Due to the reduced cross-section at the working end of the tool, it is critical to keep both the workpiece hot and the tool cooled frequently during use. This prevents tip deformation and extends tool life under repeated forging conditions.
